Sermon on the Mount Bible Study Week Seven

Week 7 Day 1   Reread the entire passage (are you sick of this yet?)

  1. Is there any new insight you’ve been given?

  1. What verse(s) have been coming up in your everyday life?

  1. How has your view of righteousness and eternal focus been changed?

  1. What is the Lord asking for your obedience in?

Week 7 Day 2 Matt 6:25-27

  1. What’s the therefore there for in vs 25?

  1. How do the previous verses help frame the point Jesus is making about not worrying?

  1. What 3 things does Jesus say not to worry about in our lives?

  1. What question does vs 25 ask?  If you were asked this question, what would your reply be?

  1. Lets talk about birds.  How do birds live?  How simple is their life?

  1. Who feeds them according to vs 26?

  1. Does worry EVER profit? Has it ever in your life?

  1. Consider Luke 10:38-42, what did Martha’s worry rob her of?

  1. What do your worries rob you of?

Week 7 Day 3 Matt 6:28-30

  1. What is your favorite flower?  Why?

  1. What 2 plants does this passage compare our concern for clothing to?

  1. How long do those 2 plants last?

  1. Would your desire for clothing and beauty be described as toiling and spinning?  How much of your time is consumed by this?

  1. The worry over clothing is a self-focused concern.  What does I Peter say about our adornment in 3:3-4.  What does God think is beautiful?

  1. Now lets compare that to what we see of the Tabernacle and how God commanded it to be constructed.  How extravagant were the outward parts?  How detailed and beautiful were the inward parts?  Where was the gold found?

  1. What does the time that you spend on your inner spiritual life vs your outward life say about what is most important to you?

  1. Is there anyway that you can redeem the time you spend in outward beauty?

  1. Jesus makes mention of King Solomon.  Ladies, we’re not going to look better than him-I promise.  Read II Chron 9 and list a few descriptive verses of Solomon’s glory and wealth.

  1. How many times have you prayed for the clothing that you need?  How often do you take matters into your own hands and purchase things that God may want to bless you with when you turn your eyes to the Lord and make your request known?

  1. Do you think that God understands and appreciates beauty?  Consider what you know about how He commanded the Tabernacle to be beautifully constructed.  He is the author of colors.  He is the creator of all things and makes all things beautiful in His time.

Week 7 Day 4 Matt 5:31-34

  1. OK, there’s “therefore” again.  Explain what it’s there for.

  1. What are the 3 things the Gentiles seek?

  1. How does 6:31-33 relate to laying up treasures in heaven and the lamp of the body?

  1. Let’s consider this in context to what we’ve covered so far. How does Matt 6:8-9 help in understanding the second half of 6:31?

5. What do the following verses say about worry/anxiety?

I Peter 5:7

Phil 4:6-7

6.What is the answer to worry according to Matt 6:33?

7.List 3 practical ways that you can apply this verse.

  1. Vs 33 speaks of seeking God’s righteousness.  We’ve been seeing a comparison of inward and outward righteousness.  Now we’re looking at verses about inward and outward success/choices.  Do you notice any similarities?

  1. Tomorrow…  for some this is a wonderful word and for others it brings fear.  What does 6:34 admonish us to do?

  1. How does this line up with James 4:13-15?

  1. Write Matt 6:33-34 in your own words.

  1. Going Deeper- Has there been a time that you have chosen to seek first the Lord and His righteousness and can testify to His faithfulness to providing for you?

Week 7 Day 5 Summary

  1. What would you title Chapter 6?

  1. Based on your pocketbook, where are you storing treasures?

  1. Do your see any correlation to worry and what you’re really treasuring?

  1. Would those closest to you describe your pursuit of the kingdom of God as deep as your pursuit of earthly pleasures?

  1. In Matt 13 Jesus tells the parable of the sower.  13:22 describes the seed that fell in the thorns.  What does it say these thorns represent?

  1. Can you relate to those thorns in your own life?   How have you been able to keep them from growing too powerful for your faith?
