Week/Lesson Four Bitterness & Forgiveness Bible Study 2010

Lesson/Week Four

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NKJV)

Doing this study has revealed to me the reason for my distress, my tight grip on my bitterness and my unwillingness to forgive. I have forsaken my first love – Jesus. I have forgotten my vows to the LORD to be in communication, prayer and to be a doer of His word. To know His word, I must read it. I must write it on the tablet of my heart. You and I must be consistently in God’s word.

When we spend time in God’s word – listening to how the Holy Spirit; instructs, encourages, challenges and guides us to understanding and then repentance – then we can and will choose to leave behind sin for God’s blessing. We cannot be both bitter and kind – that is a divided heart. LORD give us an undivided heart that we might fear your name. Reading, meditating, memorizing and speaking God’s word reminds us of God’s love towards us and His power. As we surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus – God’s propitiation for our sin, then sin will be able to see how unpleasant sin is that we will desire to stop the continuance of it our lives. In doing so we will become living, walking testimonies to what God can do with a willing heart.

Most importantly I am so thankful that God forgave me and you! So, let us work through this last week of bitterness. If there are people in your life whom you know struggle with bitterness, pray for them this week. Ask God to show you how to lovingly share with them what you have learned these four weeks.

Journal keeping and Prayer
Spend time this week asking God to reveal to you all the reasons you are bitter. As He reveals each one, ask for forgiveness for holding onto it and then ask God to show you how to forgive each person that you are bitter towards. Take time to journal what is going on in your heart. Contact your trusted friend and share what God is doing.
