Lesson/Week Seven

Lesson/Week Seven

Pastor Neil Montgomery of New Heart Community Church in McKinleyville, CA exhorted his congregation October 10th this year by reminding them of the following;
  • We cannot focus on our own abilities, strength and status to accomplish God’s purposes. We must become profoundly aware that only God has the power to win the victory in the battles we face. Gideon is a great example of this truth.
  • When we become so enmeshed in secular culture that we don’t even notice when we adopt ungodly practices- we reap the consequences. The solution: God’s word must be our standard and final authority for life and faith. Be like the Bereans. Make the time for God’s word.
  • We cannot let our desires and impulses begin to rule our lives – rather that place should belong to the Holy Spirit. Samson is a good example of this.
  • We continue in the cycle of spiritual entropy (peace, complacency, sin, pain, brokeness, deliverance, repentance, peace…) when we cry out to God for help because we are facing pain but not because we are truly sorry for our sin. The nation of Israel illustrates this as they repeated this cycle. We need to be a broken people. We need to admit our sin and invite God to do whatever it takes to in our hearts for us to change.
He also challenged them to be people with a purpose – not just busybodies. I know that I am very guilty of being a busybody. Lord, make my purpose living for your glory! What we do tells people what we believe more than what we say. The old adage is true- “more is caught than taught”.

Prayer and Journaling
Realize that we must change from the inside out (Psalm 139:22-24, Proverbs 17:3, Matthew 15:18-20). There must be a genuine heart change. No incantation of repeating scripture will change you. You must give the Lord your complete heart and allow Him to show you how to change (Put off and Put On). Ask the Lord now to reveal to you any area(s) of your heart that you are holding onto, then seek His forgiveness and let them go. Ask God to show you how to rely on and trust in Him. Write out your prayer in your journal and leave room to record how God answers it.
